They are activated automatically when It gets dark. They have a small light sensor on the tip and the light shines from both sides of the night light so it puts out enough. I purchased these for the hallway, stairway and the bathrooms.They work great to keep us from fumbling around in the dark unless the power went out! I love how small these are and that they wont run all day unless you place them somewhere that is always dark.
